Minutes – 2014, August

RIVER VALLEY ARTS GUILD   Meeting: August 25, 2014.  Meeting held at Eagles Nest Coffee House

CALL TO ORDER:  The meeting was called to order by Rheta Stears.

MEMBERSHIP: 18 members present at the meeting.

VISITORS:  Jean G from Red Wing.  Introduced by Pam C.  Jean has a wide variety of hobbies, several sewing and embroidery machines.

TREASURER’S REPORT:   On Hand:  $1,867.13       Expenditures:  None

SECRETARY’S REPORT:   Motion by Barb T., second by Nancy Z. to approved July minutes as presented via email and the website.

Decorah trip:  Gail obtained information about the Vesterheim Museum.  The date for the excursion is Friday, October 3.  There will be a main tour of the museum and then a tour of the storage unit to show us how to store textile and small objects.  Cost for museum is on your own.  If there is enough interest there may be an opportunity to take a bus.  A registration will be on the website for those who did not sign up at the August meeting.

Logo design: Donna R presented the new look of our logo.  She had a postcard size printed with the logo on one size and information about RVAG and the various subgroups on the reverse.  The cards were distributed to members present and will be available at events.

Boutique update:   Looking to September for signing up to work, etc

Open House:  This item is deferred to a later meeting.  Discussion about setting up a table at the boutique for people to obtain information about RVAG.

Scholarship:  Donna R. met with Diane Schoberg regarding the contribution of money for the Scholarship programs at Wabasha Kellogg School.  She informed us that we could donate any amount for the dollars for scholars.  If we wanted to designate a specific educational interest (arts or specific areas) then we would need to donate a minimum of $250.  We could develop the criteria for the award.  Dollars for Scholars starts soliciting fund in January for the 2014-15 school year.  After discussion a motion was made by Sally N with two options:  Motion to vote on whether we do a donated boutique item (July Meeting) or we donate $250 to Dollars for Scholars.  The boutique part of the motion failed.  The Dollars for Scholars passed with all members present voting for the Dollars for Scholars.  Somebody seconded the motion but I don’t know who it was.

Officer Nominations:  Officers will be elected inOctober.  The following positions are available:  President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Webmaster, Program Director, Greeter and Marketing.  Barb B has agreed to be Treasurer for another year and Pat B has indicated she would continue as webmaster.  All other positions are available.  Please contact any current officer or board member for further information.  This is YOUR organization.  Please consider getting involved by running for an office.

Group Structure:  A discussion ensued about the current structure of the group.  There are some feelings that it’s too structured and only a few are making the decisions.   Our current structure calls for Show and Tell, Meeting and Program.  The Board meets to create an agenda to help keep the meeting structure and allow more time for Show and Tell and Program.  Show and Tell at the beginning of the meeting is pushed and not all people are present to see what others are showing.  No decisions were forthcoming.  Discussion to continue in upcoming meetings.
